Reflecting on the Cross: Derebail Parish Observes Good Friday with Devotion

The Good Friday celebration was solemnly observed at the Most Holy Redeemer Church, Derebail, at 5:30 PM. The service was led by the Parish Priest, Rev Fr. Joseph Martis, along with Assistant Priest Rev Fr. Steevan Nelson Peris, and Fr. Rupesh Madtha, Editor of Rakno. 

Good Friday, a sacred day commemorating the Passion and Crucifixion of Jesus Christ, was marked without the regular celebration of the Eucharist. Instead, the liturgy unfolded in a reflective manner through the Liturgy of the Word, Solemn Prayers, Veneration of the Cross, and Holy Communion. The service began with the priests bowing before the altar in deep reverence on behalf of all parishioners, signifying humility and repentance. The Word of God was proclaimed, leading the faithful into a deeper understanding of Christ’s sacrifice and love.

The sermon was delivered by Fr. Rupesh Madtha, who reflected profoundly on the Passion of Christ. He emphasized that in moments when God seems silent and evil appears to prevail, it is Jesus on the Cross who grants strength and hope. Christ, the giver of life, sacrificed Himself so that humanity may live, taking upon Himself the judgment meant for all. The sermon also highlighted the injustice during Jesus’ trial: it was held at night, death sentences were passed during a feast, there was no proper arrest warrant, no consistent witnesses, and no waiting period before sentencing. Jesus was presumed guilty without fair evidence, denied a proper council trial, not given a chance to defend Himself, subjected to physical abuse, and condemned despite being innocent. These reflections reminded the faithful of the depth of Christ’s suffering and the meaning of His sacrificial death.

The faithful then participated in the Veneration of the Cross, recognizing that the Cross is not merely a symbol of suffering but a source of life and salvation. Those who look upon the Cross shall never be put to shame, as it stands as a sign of hope and redemption. The Solemn Intercessions were offered through ten intentions, praying for the needs of the Church and the entire world. The celebration concluded in silence and deep reverence. After the Eucharist, the symbolic body of Lord Jesus along with His sorrowful mother Mary was taken in a solemn procession to the Church, marking a moving end to the service.
